Internationally acclaimed for his innovative and expressive continuo realizations, Webb Wiggins has built a distinguished career as a harpsichordist and director, collaborating with many of the leading early music ensembles in the United States. He has performed and recorded with Folger Consort, Dryden Ensemble, King’s Noyse, Chatham Baroque, Oberlin Baroque Ensemble, Apollo’s Fire, Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Smithsonian Chamber Players & Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and National Symphony Orchestra, among others. His work with both vocal and instrumental soloists has earned him widespread respect within the early music community.
Beyond his performing career, Wiggins is a highly esteemed pedagogue in harpsichord, Baroque chamber music, and Baroque opera direction. He served as Associate Professor of Harpsichord at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music for eleven years and was the coordinator of the early music program at the Peabody Conservatory of Music for two decades. He has given masterclasses, lectures, and coaching sessions at institutions such as the Shanghai Music Middle School and the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Quito, as well as at various music centers across the United States. His performances have taken him to stages in Europe, Taiwan, New Zealand, and throughout North America.
His recordings can be heard on the Smithsonian, Dorian, EMI, Bard, and PGM labels, including a double solo album featuring Johann Jakob Froberger’s harpsichord and organ works, as well as performances of 17th-century Italian keyboard masters on historical instruments from the Smithsonian collection.
Wiggins holds degrees in organ performance from Stetson University and the Eastman School of Music, with additional harpsichord studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. In a unique testament to his adventurous spirit, he is perhaps the only harpsichordist in modern times to have given multiple performances on transatlantic voyages.
